As we enter February 2025, Community Access Network proudly joins our Lynchburg community in celebrating Black History Month. This year’s celebration holds special significance as we reflect on the rich legacy of African American contributions to our city’s healthcare, education, and civil rights movements.
A Legacy of Healthcare Pioneers
Dr. Thomas J. Fawcett, who started his practice in Lynchburg in 1904, was one of the first African American physicians in the area. With an education from Boydton Institute and Leonard Medical College, Dr. Fawcett served the community for over four decades from his office on Fifth Street, demonstrating a profound commitment to patient care.
Similarly, Dr. Roger William Lomax brought his skills to Lynchburg in 1909 after graduating from Leonard Medical College. He established his practice at various locations on Fifth and Floyd streets, serving the community until the mid-1940s, and becoming a trusted figure in healthcare.
Today, Community Access Network continues this legacy by providing accessible, quality healthcare to all members of our diverse community, regardless of their ability to pay. We recognize that health equity remains a crucial goal, and we are committed to addressing the healthcare disparities that still affect our African American neighbors.
