Community Access Network’s Observance of MLK Day
Community Access Network will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As we take this day to honor Dr. King’s legacy, we reflect on his profound impact on healthcare equity and his vision of a society where quality healthcare is accessible to all, regardless of race, economic status, or background.
Dr. King’s Vision and Healthcare Access
Dr. King once said, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” These words continue to resonate deeply with our mission at Community Access Network. In Lynchburg and surrounding communities, we see daily reminders of why accessibility to quality healthcare matters – and why breaking down barriers to care remains as important today as it was during Dr. King’s time.
Our Commitment to Continuing the Dream
At Community Access Network, we work to honor and embody Dr. King’s principles of equality and justice through our everyday practices:
- Providing care regardless of insurance status or ability to pay
- Offering walk-in appointments to accommodate diverse scheduling needs
- Ensuring culturally responsive care that respects each patient’s background
- Working to eliminate healthcare disparities in our community
- Building trust through understanding and respect

Community Impact and Looking Forward
Here in Lynchburg, MLK Day serves as more than just a day off – it’s a reminder of our ongoing responsibility to serve our diverse community with dignity and respect. As we honor Dr. King’s legacy, we recommit ourselves to breaking down healthcare barriers and ensuring that quality medical care remains accessible to all members of our community.
MLK Day of Service
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service. As Dr. King said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” This powerful question inspires millions of Americans to transform this holiday into a “day on, not a day off” by engaging in volunteer work and community service.
Here in the Lynchburg area, there are numerous ways to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. Local food banks, local non profits, and community centers often organize special volunteer events on this day. Consider joining a neighborhood cleanup, participating in a meal delivery service for seniors, or helping at a local organization. Even small acts of kindness – checking on elderly neighbors, organizing a donation drive, or helping a family in need – embody the spirit of this day.
If you’re looking for volunteer opportunities, local organizations like Lynchburg Daily Bread, Meals on Wheels, and United Way of Central Virginia often have prospects. These activities not only help our community but also bring us together in the spirit of Dr. King’s vision of the “beloved community.”
