At Community Access Network, our team is built up of knowledgeable, skilled providers who will care for your family as if they were their own. Dr. Margaret Hobson, an internal medicine specialist for our Community Health Center, loves working with community health initiatives as well as working with children through pediatric care. She graduated with honors from University of Virginia in 1986 and has over 30 years of experience. Get to know Dr. Hobson a bit better by reading below.
What made you want to go into internal medicine?
Dr. Hobson: I’m double boarded in internal medicine and pediatrics. I actually did pediatrics, so that I could do all ages, but a little more in depth. I actually attended residency and did a joint program in internal medicine and pediatrics in Rochester. So, I like seeing all ages, but I wanted to know a certain depth so I would feel confident in all that I do.
In your own words, what’s the best part about your profession?
Dr. Hobson: Oh, I think it’s because you can do multiple generations and I very much enjoy working with children and kind of the optimism of them and start them on a healthy lifestyle. And then, you know, treat them into adulthood.
What’s the one general piece of advice you would want patients to know about their health?
Dr. Hobson: Exercise and eating healthy is really important, and getting health care. Without healthcare, you often get problems that can be avoided.
How often would you recommend to patients to come into Community Access Network for a check up?
Dr. Hobson Well, it depends on each age group. When you’re younger, you go more frequently. [For adults,] every year to two years [is recommended]. Especially as an adult, if you have a family history of hypertension, or you’re overweight or you have diabetes in your family, it’s very important that you get checked for those things and try to prevent those things as an adult. As kids, it’s childhood illnesses, immunizations, and kind of learning about the different challenges of each age group and live healthfully. So that you have a good, healthy life as opposed to meeting different diseases in life; diabetes, hypertension, stroke, etc.
Any favorite hobbies outside of work?
Dr. Hobson: Oh yes, I’m pretty active! I exercise regularly and I kayak, paddleboard, hike, swim and have a big organic garden.
